Alexander Gubski: The Evolution of a Master Printmaker
The Shutter and the Darkroom
My journey with light began at twelve years old with a 36mm Zorki-6. Those early days of "darkroom magic" taught me that a photograph isn’t finished when the shutter clicks—it is only just beginning. Throughout my career, I have transitioned through every era of digital evolution, but my heart remains with the grand landscape.
Following the Masters of Scale
I draw my deepest inspiration from the values of Ansel Adams. When I first encountered his work, I was struck by the monumental difference that physical size and intentional lighting make in the perception of an image. To achieve that same museum-grade presence, I realized I had to master every variable.
I began a years-long obsession with resolution and processing. I don't chase photorealism; I chase the emotional memory of the place. My goal is to enhance reality—to bring the vibrant, exaggerated energy of nature into your interior space.
The Artisan's Hands: From Calgary to the World
Many people ask why I still operate as a "one-man shop" in my Calgary studio. The answer is simple: Accountability. I have spent thousands of dollars and countless hours in trial and error to perfect the art of acrylic face-mounting. Today, I comfortably mount massive 60" x 130" art pieces that most commercial labs wouldn't dare touch. When I roll a print onto the acrylic, I am re-living the experience of standing in front of that wonder of nature.
By personally handling the printing, joining premium Italian moldings, and hand-wrapping every fabric liner, I ensure that my work is an "Artisan" product in the truest sense. It is not "rustic"—it is the most exclusive, luxury finish available in the fine art market.
Why Direct-from-Artist Matters
When you acquire a piece from my portfolio, you aren't paying for a Las Vegas gallery's rent or a sales team's commission. You are investing in:
- True Limited Editions: I maintain a strict, small number of prints per image to protect your investment.
- Direct Provenance: Every piece is signed, numbered, and hand-crafted by me, carrying a soul that mass-produced art cannot replicate.
- Bespoke Curation: I personally answer every inquiry, helping you select the perfect scale and finish to complement your specific home or office environment.
To keep my portfolio alive, I must travel a lot. With the spread of the Internet, it became pretty easy to scout locations for the photoshoot, by scrolling through images online or flying over the virtual landscape in Google Earth. But sometimes, I do actual flying to find interesting spots. I obtained my pilot license in 2012, and since then, I keep asking myself why did I learn to fly a plane and not a helicopter :) The Rocky Mountains are full of wonders, but there are almost no useable runways to land a plane.
